Dutch artist hitchhikes with a caravan connecting the three European Capitals of Culture
June 20 – 23, 2010
A Dutch artist found unique way to connect the three European
capitals of culture for 2010. Tjerk Ridder from Utrecht, together
with his friend Peter Bijl, a dog and guitar, undertook a
hitchhiking journey with a caravan, but without a car. The voyage
started on January 3rd, 2010, from Utrecht and passing via the
Ruhr-Area in Germany and Pécs in Hungary, will reach its
destination - Istanbul in Turkey.
In order to keep moving, the two artists depend on people willing
to tow them to the next place. The voyage is a metaphor, showing
that one needs the others to keep going. And while travelling, on
their turn, Tjerk and Peter help out their drivers by inspiring
them to live up to their dreams.
Tjerk’s voyage is being done the most environmentally friendly way
possible. The roof of the caravan has been outfitted with a
daylight solar panel, so that lighting, laptop and telephone
operate on solar energy.
After a warm welcome in Pecs and Hungary, the project now crosses
the Balkan area and will reach Sofia on June 20th and Plovdiv on
June 23rd.
